Combating Dryness: Summer Dry Skin Explained

Thought dry skin was exclusive to winter? Think again! As a season that brings high UV, increased humidity and extreme temps, there’s no surprise our skin’s hydration is zapped throughout summer! Let’s take a look into summer skin dryness:

COMMON CULPRITS FOR DRY SUMMER SKIN

  1. Hot Temperatures
Exposure to heat dehydrates the skin and increases sweating, which strips your skin of moisture and leaves it dehydrated.
  2. Humidity
High humidity can disrupt your skin’s balance, causing it to overproduce oil while still lacking hydration.
  3. Exposure to elements
Those holiday pool swims with chlorine, frequent dips in the ocean and heavy sunscreens can all strip your skin’s natural oils, leaving it feeling dry, irritated and flaky.
  4. Air Conditioning
Thought you could avoid all of the above and sit in the aircon all day? Bad news… The constant exposure to air-conditioned spaces removes moisture from the air, which in-turn dries out your skin.
  5. Dehydration
Increased temperatures and more sweat means we need to drink a lot more water than usual, and in the busy holiday season that can be challenging. If you’re dehydrated, your skin will be too.

TELLTALE SIGNS OF SUMMER SKIN DRYNESS

  1. The obvious - feeling dry!
Our skin is pretty great at letting us know when it’s zapped of moisture. When it’s dehydrated and dry, it’s common for your skin to feel tight and sensitive.
  2. Looking like you’ve aged overnight
While ageing overnight is impossible, it’s not possible to feel like you have! Dry skin is less supple and plump so fine lines appear more easily.
  3. Flaky and rough skin
Dry patches, flaking, or a rough uneven texture can appear as your skin struggles to retain moisture.
  4. Skin is feeling itchy
If you’re feeling irritation and itchy all of a sudden, it’s likely a sign of dryness.
  5. Dullness & lacking lustre
Without enough hydration, your skin can lose its glow, appearing dull, lacklustre and tired.

HOW TO COMBAT DRY SUMMER SKIN

The good news is that you can combat dry skin in summer by protecting outside & hydrating inside… By that, we mean:

PROTECTING OUTSIDE:

  • Rehydrating & locking in moisture with skincare
  • Protecting with sunscreen
  • Wear a hat, cover up & avoid exposure to UV

HYDRATING INSIDE:

  • Drink more water than usual!
  • Eat water-rich foods (i.e watermelon, cucumber, oranges, leafy greens etc)
  • Refreshing herbal iced teas
  • Replenish lost electrolytes with coconut water
